Our Songs Become Ashes is a seven-track album by Allan J Kimmel, solo guitarist who performs as Departure Street. The album is an instrumental take on the ephemeral nature of memory and life’s joys and sorrows. The music creates a cinematic latticework of sympathetic notes and sublime textures intended to guide the listener to a contemplation of time, the loss of the things we love and desire.
Allan J. Kimmel is an American/French solo electric guitarist based in Paris, France. He plays alternative ambient and neo-folk/rock and psychedelic music with occasional bossa nova, Middle Eastern, and American blues underpinnings. Kimmel’s style was influenced by guitarists John Renbourn, Jorma Kaukonen, João Gilberto, Ira Kaplan, among others. He records under the name Departure Street (a nod to rue de Depart, a Paris street that is featured prominently in the Agnès Vardas film Cléo de 5 à 7). He has collaborated with musicians Blake Edward Conley (as Rivers of Glass) and Chilean experimental guitarist Francisco Sanfuentes, his music has appeared on various compilation albums, and has been featured on various radio shows (KEXP, WFMU, WZBC, WGOT, Lot Radio, Koop Radio, etc.). According to a review of his debut album, “the songs tend to focus on a couple of related emotions which seem to hit up the same receptors in the brain. This pattern of energy feels like a circle of cerebral nostalgia, tranquil melancholy and soft strains of wonder.”

"Kimmel walks the fine line between sorrowful longing and sublime beauty. His technical expertise on the guitar is matched with an earnest emotional expressiveness that draws the listener further and further into a womb of serene and welcome sadness. Close your eyes for this one and you will be transported like ashes rising up into the sky."

Lush, rich ambience from the Archives label. There's a feeling of enormous spaces and awe inspiring vistas here, something extreme and beautiful.
Highly recommended.
